Last week during our 5th grade library class we read Daredevil: The Daring Life of Betty Skelton by Meghan McCarthy. This week learned about another daredevil, Ruth Elder. We read Flying Solo: How Ruth Elder Soared into America's Heart by Julie Cummins. Before reading this book we revisited what we learned about Betty Skelton and took notes. After reading Flying Solo we discussed what we learned about Ruth Elder. Using our notes we focused on the similarities between these two remarkable women. A common theme throughout our discussion and work was how both women faced challenges, faced discrimination, and never gave up. Such an important message for all our students!

Queen of the Falls by Chris Van Allsburg. This is a fascinating read of Annie Edson Taylor's daring determination. Before reading this story I began with some guided inquiry. Each student had two photographs of Ms. Taylor. I gave them a few minutes to write down any thing they wondered about these two photos. This was a great introductory to the book. This guided inquiry before the reading provides the students with some background, helps them make connections, and increases their engagement. This activity also helped look for and see small details.
