Thank You, Sarah: The Woman Who Saved Thanksgiving

5th and 6th graders, I hope you enjoyed the nonfiction picture book, Thank You, Sarah: The Woman Who Saved Thanksgiving by Laurie Halse Anderson.  Often we celebrate holidays without even thinking how they came to be or their unique history.  Please click on the following link to answer some questions about the book.

Balloons Over Broadway!

Today in 3rd grade library we read Balloons Over Broadway: The True Story of the Macy's Parade Puppeteer. This is a favorite nonfiction picture book that I love to share. It is written and illustrated by Maine's own Melissa Sweet.

The students loved sharing their connections with the Macy's Parade.  Some watch it every year. Some have seen it before and some have never seen the Parade.  We did some exploring of the Macy's Parade website. There are lots of fun activities and information on this interactive website. We took a look at the lineup for this year's parade.  We loved how it showed how tall and long the balloons are.  And how many handlers it takes to man the balloon!

GRA Skype

Third graders finally got to meet the students they have been connecting with for the Global Read Aloud Project! We skyped with the third grade students of Phippsburg Elementary School. The students shared their favorite part of The Year of Billy Miller by Kevin Henkes.  Check out the blog we used to make the connections over the last six weeks: http://yobillymiller.blogspot.com/

November is Picture Book Month!

November is also known as Picture Book Month! Here at Georgetown Central School we are going to see how many picture books we can read this month.  5th and 6th graders kicked it off today. They found their favorite books and spent some time just enjoying the pleasure of reading a picture book. It was so much just chatting about some favorites. There was a lot of talk that started with. "Do you remember that book that..." There was also lots of laughter!
I challenge you to take some time to enjoy picture books!
