Yesterday, we read another great story that shares a meaningful message or two. The Cloud Spinner by Michael Catchpool tells the tale of a boy who can spin cloth from the clouds but all is not well when the King demands the boy to spin a new scarf, new cloak, and dresses for the Queen and Princess.

During our third grade library we have been focusing on being able to explain the message or lesson in folktales. We read The Monkey and the Crocodile by Paul Galdone which was perfect because we had recently just read the Chickadee Award nominee, Monkey: A Trickster Tale from India by Gerald McDermott. We had a great discussion about the message or lesson being taught from these two tales and comparing the similarities and differences.
